This Year's Model Updates:

The MR2 Spyder rolls into 2002 with a new Formula One-style five-speed manual transmission. The only other change is that the yellow cloth interior has been discontinued.

Pros:
  • Well-balanced mid-engine design, scores high on the fun scale, awesome car to run hard on the track, affordability.
Cons:
  • Homely design, lack of cargo space, dated interior design, non-adjustable seats.

  • This car is a blast!!!! - 2002 Toyota MR2 Spyder

We use this car for day trips as as a commuter. Fantastic fuel economy. Fun to drive, very responsive. Gets many looks from everyone. Quality is high and so far it has been very reliable.

  • Fun car to drive - 2002 Toyota MR2 Spyder

The handling is superb. The ride solid and comfortable. Visibility is fine for a 2-seater roadster. Cornering is great. The 1.8L 140hp engine delivers (because of the cars lightweight). For $24K, it comes with 4-disc ABS, leather, engine immoblizer, CD player, glass rear window with defroster, and the SMT is great to drive. Most of all, its just so much fun to drive. If having a blast with the top down, living life and enjoying a great drive in the country is your primary goal (and without breaking the bank), this is the car for you.

  • Great convertible for the price - 2002 Toyota MR2 Spyder

For the price, you cant be it, plus its a Toyota! Handles well and corners on a dime, without any sliding or swaying. This is a great second car, as storage is non-existent (you dont realize how important this is until you dont have it and you need it, trust me).

  • Wow!! I love this little car!! - 2002 Toyota MR2 Spyder

Ive now owned this little car for four years now, and I have to say its the best Ive ever owned. Gas mileage - wow! I average 32-36 mpg around town. No repairs, just oil changes. Everybody is still asking me what it is... they think its a Porsche! Hangs curves really well with rear engine. Dont complain about the storage space, cuz its not made for 10 hour vacation trips. Great for touring the countryside, relieving stress, enjoying the scenery. Always turns heads, even a six year old car. Would I sell it? Never!!

  • nice little package - 2002 Toyota MR2 Spyder

The exterior design is the big seller on this auto. Interior design is functional. I have the sequential transmission and hope that it works out well without high repair bills to come. Well see. Being a small vehicle you will feel all bumps in the road. It is quite noisy. I find the power to be acceptable, but then again I am not one to look for V8 power. Lack of cargo space is a big factor to consider before purchasing this auto. You simply have none. And I mean none. I am extremely happy and satisfied with it. I look forward to driving it every day. I would recommend it to anyone who can do without cargo space.

  • Greatest little car ever! - 2002 Toyota MR2 Spyder

I enjoyed my little Spyder for only 18 months. Unfortunately, I was in a 5 car collision, with my little car being the first one hit, by a big landscape truck with a bucket. I walked away from that accident with a couple of scrapes! I am SOO impressed with how well that car handled an accident of that magnitude and protected me as well. I miss my little car!

Bought used this year and got a yellow one with the 5 speed. (The other choice was Red with more miles) The first few weeks were a pain due to a faulty fuel line clip. (Fuel line popped off 2 times on the road. Not good) No more troubles after the clip was replaced. Absolute joy to drive, all the little imperfections melt away soon as I take the first corner. :) What a great little car.

  • The "perfect" sports car - 2002 Toyota MR2 Spyder

What can you say about this car other than it reall is a grand slam home run. It is a fast, extremely agile, well built, reliable sports car that is not only inexpensive, but also rare (i.e. not found in every parking lot out there). The looks from other people when driving this car (whether theyre car buffs or not) is astounding. Some admirers ignore Porsches and BMWs to inquire about my car. Plus, the resale value is extremely high. The Spyder is about delivering a highly satisfying driving experience on a budget. In this area, it truly delivers!
